Dilation of Capillaries
The face of this patient appeared flushed due to dilation of the capillaries. Severe vomiting could also cause rupture of the blood vessels in the eyes.

Protecting the troops from a foreign disease proved especially difficult when the illness defied conventional treatment. Though initially baffled by it, U.S. medical teams learned how to identify and treat Epidemic Hemorrhagic Fever through research and observation. Epidemic Hemorrhagic Fever patients presented with a complex series of symptoms that included shock and acute kidney failure. Improved treatment techniques reduced the fatality rate from twenty percent initially to less that five percent by 1952.
